Deepti Yadav is the founder of Basant Kothi, a Gurgaon-based brand. Given her background in finance, Yadav doesn’t concern herself with concepts like high and low fashion. Basant Kothi, launched in 2021, is deeply committed to promoting sustainable production practices and showcasing traditional Indian craftsmanship. This connection with the work of local craftspeople is a result of the atmosphere Yadav grew up in. Her father being part of the army meant the family kept moving around, which means she grew up around a variety of handicrafts, from north east’s cane furniture to Kashmir’s crewel embroidery and Naga shawls.
But it is much later, after she gave birth to her daughter, that Yadav realised the importance of making more conscious choices and started moving toward a more sustainable lifestyle. She appreciates structure, cuts and simplicity in everything. This reflects clearly in Basant Kothi’s products, which are generally minimal and understated. Her design language gravitates towards neutral colours and a clean aesthetic.
Clean lines, fuss-free, soft and sassy. These pieces are for the effortlessly stylish. Maximum impact, minimum effort.
Being minimal and simple evades the question of categorising oneself into the genres of high and low fashion. Basant Kothi moves towards sustainable choices with a neutral and clean aesthetic which is highly understated.
