The son of a tailor, Aseem Kapoor grew up in Gurgaon when it was still a village. His father was one of the first tailors to make suits in Gurgaon, and Kapoor grew up studying pattern cutting. At school, with little to stir the imagination, Kapoor spent hours sketching nature and imagining the world beyond Gurgaon. It was only when former students returned to school with stories about fashion and design, from NID and NIFT, did Kapoor realise his ambition.
Years later, for his graduation project ‘Wandering Tribes Gather No Dust,’ Kapoor presented a menswear collection that was named the best in menswear at NIFT that year. After working for fifteen years at Tarun Tahiliani’s studio, Kapoor launched his own line. The draped silhouettes were a tribute to the different parts of India, in a look that was thoroughly modern yet rooted in traditional India.
From the very beginning, Kapoor has pursued an aesthetic rooted in India with her tribes as a guiding light.
Aseem Kapoor encourages you to “think global, act tribal,” in a celebration of fashion that connects beyond borders.
