NOMAD

The journey begins in the Rann of Kutch, the idea of a barren desert shattered by azure lakes. The Rabari nomads, draped in black, and the Ahir, bewitching in their colourful embroidery, cope with a new way of life brought on by the region's rapid redevelopment after the 2001 earthquake. Object interprets this transformation in a decrepit colonial bungalow, its painted walls peeling, the models with black smeared on their hands and face. Deep in the Dang, the jungle beckons with its bamboo craft and medicinal remedies. And in Rajkot, a women's self-help group crochets their way into the pages of American fashion magazines. We call this issue the Journey of a Nomad.

PEACE

Issue two is preoccupied with silk—the queen of fabrics, lustrous and sought by courts across countries. As we trace the fabric’s history from cocoon to couture, reporters, academics, experts, models, designers and a coterie of silk enthusiasts chime in. Their journey starts in Banaras, travelling along the silk route. Here it crosses into China, swaggers past Iran and dives deep into Italy, where the erstwhile silk route meets its historic conclusion. A fine example of the manner in which textile galvanised nations, was at the centre of conflict and lent itself to the finest garments, Issue Two is also known as the Issue of Peace, ahimsa.

CONFLICT

Find your feet traversing across the breadth of India, your soul stirred by the chaos in Palestine and your craft fix satisfied through the introduction of the JoB Shop. Rooted at the cross-section of culture and conflict, the mini issue is preoccupied with the attack on Gaza. Object reporters trace the garment supply chain from India to Israel, while the longform story looks at the impact of state surveillance in Hyderabad. Fashion manifests itself in imagery inspired from the colours of a flag as well as pattern-making. In the Conflict issue, we're concerned with origin stories, from wars to garments.
